In the world of boxing: Mercito Gesta once again showed no mercy to his opponent over the weekend. Gesta won, via unanimous decision, against Mexican opponent Gilberto Flaco Gonzalez.  After a 10 round slugfest, Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta is back in the boxing game.  A swollen face and a left eye that can he barely open was the face of Gonzalez, in the aftermath of his fight with Gesta.  Gesta proved that despite being out of the ring for a year and a half, he still packs a killer punch.

The Chelsea at the Cosmopolitan Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas was at capacity for Saturday’s fight night.  Boxing fans from all over trooped to witness Mercito’s comeback in the boxing ring.  Gesta slugged it out with Gonzalez as a co-main event of the Orozco-Gibson fight in the lightweight division.  Gesta was in full control of the fight except for the 3rd round, when he was knocked down. He calls it an error on his side, since he wasn’t expecting the uppercut from Gonzales.

“After that 10 rounds, I feel that everything is good, I’m back, and I just need to fix a little bit of it, kase yung mind set ko is not like that it’s been a while too na hindi ako nakalaban,” Gesta said.  “Hopefully a couple of months from now, I want to comeback and fight again. I feel good; everything is good right now, my therapy for my surgery tsaka yung conditioning ko.”

Gesta draws inspiration from kababayans who support him, despite being sidelined for quite a while.  With the score of 96-93, 99-91, and 98-92, Gesta won via unanimous decision.

Mercito now holds a record of 30 wins, 1 draw, and 2 losses, with 16 knockouts.

After over a year on the shelf, Filipino lightweight boxer Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta is set to make his in-ring return this coming April.

The 29-year old Cebuano opted to go for shoulder surgery, keeping him out of action for all of 2016. With his shoulder ready to go, Gesta returns to the ring on April 1st against Mexican Gilberto Gonzales at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“It’s always exciting coming back from a lay off for a long time. Hopefully everything is going to turn good. My shoulder is a lot better. My rehab and I’m just really excited and looking forward to this fight coming up.” Gesta told ABS-CBN News’ Steve Angeles.

This time around, ‘No Mercy’ has taken his camp to the legendary Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles, under the tutelage of champion coach Freddie Roach.

“Freddie has experience, he’s been working with a lot of good fighters. I know he can add a lot of technique or skills in the fight if I’m going to use him.”

Gesta began coming into the Wild Card Gym as a sparring partner, until eventually deciding to train there full time late in 2016.

Having been a win away from a world title back in 2012, Gesta hopes that training with the best can eventually bring him to the top of the mountain.

“Were really looking forward to having a good relation with Freddie and maybe some day for a title fight,” Gesta said. “I’m happy. Everyone is happy on my team and I’m just excited right now, that I’m training with Freddie.”
